Five years ago I founded The Future of Talent Institute to provide talent leaders with insight into emerging trends and issues that will affect how they recruit, develop and retain the talented people they will need to meet business goals. Each year we conduct research into one or two areas that are suggested by our members, work with clients to help them uncover trends unique to their sectors or industries, commission white papers, and hold an annual retreat.

Thinking on the Edge
We also look for out-of-the box thinkers – people on the edge of new technologies, new practices, and those uncovering new approaches to old issues. Joe Gerstandt a speaker, facilitator and blogger on next generation diversity and inclusion practices is one of those thinkers. Joe works with Fortune 500 corporations, small non-profit organizations and everything in between. His writing and insights have been published in The Diversity Factor, the Workforce Diversity Network newsletter, the American Diversity Report and various online learning communities and blogs.

So, we asked him to pen a white paper for us on diversity and what is happening to the concept and practice as we head into this century.

Free White Paper
His white paper called “Being Competitive for Talent Means Being Serious About Inclusion,”  which you can download for free here, takes us through a valuable examination of what diversity and inclusion mean today. He has taken a look at the intersection of behavioral science, social media, innovation, and organizational culture and he explores how organizations can more successfully and more efficiently deliver on their promises by better utilizing intangible assets.

We all want to apply 21st century approaches to 21st century issues and Joe believes it is time to re-set the conversation on diversity and inclusion. As he says:

“It is not uncommon to find an organization reducing dynamic and complex issues down to ethnic food celebrations and predominantly reactive conversations about tolerance and compliance. Not only do organizations and their leaders commonly miss the mark on this set of issues, but we are also at a point in time when the importance and real business value of diversity and inclusion is increasing. Issues of diversity and inclusion are more closely linked to the success and survival of our organizations than ever before.”

You can hear Joe on a free webinar that will air on Thursday, September 17th, at 11 am PT / 2 pm ET . To register for the webinar click here.

You can meet him at our annual Retreat being held from October 4-6 in Asilomar, California (near Monterey).
